4.4: Monitoring my work (journal entries)

08/09/10 - Today we started research on record and the history of the development of it and how it has changed over time. We started our research from all the way back in the 19th century and created our own timeline of the inventions and inventors to show a clear list of how they have developed from then all the way to the present day.

13/09/10 - In today's lesson, we started filling out a worksheet on 'the types of record' to develop our understanding on them. We found out that record falls under 4 main platforms which are Print, Audio, Film and Web-based. We then looked at ways that we could incorporate these types of record into our projects like podcasts etc.

06/10/10 - In today's lesson, we started to create our own powerpoint's and had to do further research on the history of recording formats (print, audio, film and web-based.)

20/10/10 - In today's lesson, we understood the medium of record and how there are many different types of mediums.

03/11/10 - In today's lesson, we continued our research for our powerpoint and or teacher gave us a brief on what we needed to include within it. He showed us an example of a good powerpoint for a sense of guidance of our own ones.

10/11/10 - In today's lesson, we started to actually make our presentations for 4.1, understanding different types of record and he history/development behind it.

15/11/10 - In today's lesson we had a visitor, Trevor Jarvis, who was a professional animator who came in to teach us a bit about animation and to show us how we can incorporate animation into our music video. To begin with, he introduced the software that we would be working with which was Adobe. We had never used this software before so it was very useful. He helped taught us how to create key frames using shapes and movement just like animations. We made ours using the concept of bouncing balls.

24/11/10 - In today's lesson we had another visitor, Lokman Chekki, who is a production assistant and also a professional camera man. He gave us an introduction on cameras and explained the development of both analogue and digital cameras and all the technical elements behind it. We then had to take all of the information that we had found and put it into our powerpoint on the history of record. We also had to focus on the 'history of film' and include as much information on it as possible. We also talked about the future development of recording with cameras such as 3D and 4D and that their entail aim is holograms.Aswell as Lokman Chekki, we had another visitor from RichMix called Lindsay who came to interview a few of us on RichMix itself and get our opinions on it and how we think it can be improved. I was one of the people she interviewed and answered as honestly as possible.

29/11/10 - In today's lesson, Trevor Jarvis came in again to help us start to create the animation for our actual music videos. We used a new tool on the software which was a tracing tool where you can trace a picture to create an animated version. For my groups animation, we all decided on an individual animation to put into our music video and it was my job to create the hamster for the video.In future lessons I will develop the hamster animation and have it flying into the sky.

08/12/10 - In today's lesson we had another visitor, Yoshito Darmon, who used to work for a filming company as a professional camera man. He taught us a little bit about what he knew and showed us how to use white balance when filming and taking pictures. Not only that, he showed us how to set up a tripod and how to set up a camera on a tripod. We also started to learn about camera shots and frames. We learnt about the rule of three, lead room and headroom which are detailed elements that photographers and camera men look at to frame a picture properly.

19/01/11 - In today's lesson, we continued to discuss the progress of our music videos and finalised ideas about the song, discussed the storyline, studied the target audience and looked at all the elements required for the music video.

24/01/11 - In today's lesson, we discussed and planned out the storyboard for the song, dividing the storyboard into verses so each person could do a verse each. We then did an overall storyboard for the whole song. We typed up all production meeting notes and planned out the shots for the music video.

26/01/11 - In today's lesson, we assigned roles such as who will plan costumes, locations and props and who will be in charge of writing letters to request to film in the locations etc. We also discussed who will be in charge of making contracts and the schedule plan. We also had to discuss who will be in charge of researching the health and safety risks when making a music video.

02/02/11 - In today's lesson, I started to write up the audience survey results, analyzing and giving comments to suit our story plan. As a group we discussed how we can alter the storyline and the music video as a whole in order to meet the needs of our target audience.

07/02/11 - We had a production meeting today in which we decided on the roles that we will be undertaking within the actual music video and the general characters that we will have in it. We decided on a lead girl, parents (mum and dad), and an ensemble of people that will be in the crowd during the procession. My role in the music video is being apart of the ensemble crowd during the procession. It isn't a major part in the video, however I will be featured in it.

09/03/11 - Today we were visited by a software company, MOVIESTORM. They gave us a detailed account on how it works and how they use it. This is a brand new way in which to create music videos and start animations from scratch. They done this so that it allows everyone to be a movie maker. I think this is a very useful software that can help people to be creative.

14/03/11 - In today's lesson I continued to complete extra written work to get up to date with it all, adding more details to them. I continued to analyse the audience survey results and looked further into ways in which the video could be altered in order to suit the audience. I also improved some other things in order to reach the next grade.

4.3: working as a team

The music video is a group production so it will need to be created as a group. It is important that we work well together and listen and cooperate well in order for this to be successful.

4.3: preparing equipment.

The equipment that I will need for this music video will be a camera and a tripod.
Before I begin to film my music video I will need to book them both so that I can access them. The camera is on high demand so it is essential that i do this.
Once I have gathered all of my resources and equipment, I will need to look after them and use them to my advantage so that I can get the best work out of the time with the camera.

Animator - Trevor Jarvis

• The software that we will be using is Flash. This goes under Visual arts and performing arts.
• He then gave us an intro about the software and how it is mainly used for animation

Time frames and key frames - these are different layers were you input your animation cartoon and add in transitions in between so when you play through the whole thing it looks like it’s moving.

He also introduced us to an artist called Edvard Muybridge he specialized in making photos that people put together to make an animation.

4.3: Health and Safety.

My fellow production team, camera man and cast have the right to work in a safe, neutral enviroment, therefore it is essential that we have a health and safety list to have knowledge of all safety hazards and avoid them.

Before we shoot the music video we will need to check the weather forecast for that day previously to avoid any hazards or problem with the camera. Our first location for the music video is Purdy street. On a road there is many safety hazards. To get different angles of the street for the establishing jump shots. The camera person has to travel to different parts of street for example, at the top of the street, we will have to make sure that there are no vehicles travelling down the road at this point, this should be easy as the shot wont take more than a minute. Soon after this we will need to shoot the ensemble and main character walking down the street mourning. We chose this location because it is a quiet, local road with not many cars travelling down it often. We will make sure all cast are close together and seen so accidents do not occur.

In our second location (a bedroom) There will not be many safety hazards, we will just need to make sure the camera tripod is placed in a spacious relevant place.

In our third location (the graveyard) we will need to make sure all of the cast are placed in a correct position around the grave, to avoid accidents and injuries. The camera tripod will also be placed in a clear relevant space.

In our last location (Victoria park) we will make sure that the hole that she is digging up is previously created to avoid wasting time and injuries.

4.2: Planning Performance

What will you be doing as a performance during Record?
In terms of performance in the Record, I will be in the funeral procession in the first scene as a part of the crowd walking down the road going towards the graveyard for the burial.

Describe the sequence or story that you will perform.
The beginning starts with a girl walking down the road with a bouquet of flowers and then gradually the crowd gets bigger and bigger with more and more people being seen. I will be amongst this group of people walking on the road. Then it goes to the burial site where we go and lay down flowers on the grave that the "person" has just been buried in. I will be crowding around the grave with the rest of the ensemble.

What do you need to do between now and performance time?
I need to go over this scene with the rest of the cast and the other producers and then I need to do a few rehearsals on these scenes, setting out exactly how its going to be done and where everyone is going to be. Also, I need to prepare costumes and make-up for myself and the rest of the cast.

When and where will you rehearse?
I will be having a rehearsal before the filming date which will probably be on Wednesday 9th February in the David Sharpe Theatre.

Where will the performance be?
The performance will be taking place in a park

4.2: Story of the music video.

My music video is about a group of friends who are going to a funeral to bury one of their "friends". It is a very emotional time for them but there is one girl that it effects the most as the boy they buried was her bestfriend. She can't eat, can't sleep and is becoming a zombie. She wakes up in the middle of the night reminiscing about there times together and all becomes too much. She runs out in the middle of the night to the graveyard and digs up the grave because she is crying and upset. We see the box. She dusts it down and opens it to reveal that the person was just a hamster. The hamster fly's up to heaven (through animation) and she finally gets to say her last goodbye.

This story will be for an audience who have a peculiar sense of humour and enjoy music videos with a storyline.

1) Identify questions to answer and problems to resolve.
Before proceeding with the record unit, there were many things that I wanted to find out about the history of record and how the recording technology has developed from the very first recording equipment to now and the factors that have influenced these developments. Also I wanted to find out about the different types of camera shots and camera techniques so that whatever I found out could be applied to the creation of my own music video. I was also interested in finding out the skills needed that could compliment the making of a film.

6) Support conclusions, using reasoned arguments and evidence.
In order to find the answers to these questions, I had to do a lot of research and gather information from what I found. I used predominately internet resources to find out some of the information and also I interviewed industry professionals with experience to find out a lot about cameras, skills and the history of record. In order to show my findings, I put the information that I found out in to a file to show my understanding of it.

4.1: Camera Shots

There are 3 types of shots in terms of shot sizes. They are a close-up, a medium shot and a long shot. These can then be broken down even further! Which are:
Extreme longshot,
Medium longshot,
Medium Close up,
Big close up,
Extreme close up.

Establishing shot: Opening shot or sequence, which is used to set the scene and establish where the scene is taking place. (Usually an extreme long shot.)

Two shots: This is when it includes two individuals in order to establish the relationship between them which provides us with understanding of who they are and status.

A point of view shot (POV): It is a shot which shows what that individual/character sees from their own personal view.

Angle of shot: It is the direction and height from which the camera scene takes place. For example a high angled shot could be used to show the aftermath of a disaster that has happened and familiarise us with the damage that it has done and the vulnerability of the people.

Master shot: a shot which shows all of the characters or people.
Panning shot: is where the camera moves slowly or quickly from side to side from a fixed axis.
Tilt shot: a tilt shot is when a camera moves up and down from a fixeed axis.
Crane shot: where the camera is mounted on a crane and moves around the area.
Tracking shot (or dolly shot): where the camera follows the action moving along tracks.

The making of a music video - House of Cards.

Aaron Koblin used ideas from a research project that was done by the students in UCLA university. That was the inspiration for the effects that were used throughout the video.
In order to create it, they used 3 different systens which was a Geometric Information System, a Lidar and Laser technology. They also have other technology that can help them to distort images.
The cameras that were ordered didn't arrive on time for the video shoot so as an alternative they used computers. This was very resourceful and was a good use of technology.

4.1: Expert advice - New York Video School.

In order to get a real strong feel of the music and to be able to understand it, you should lock yourself in a room, take a notepad and just listen to the song various times. When listening to the song, you should write whatever comes to mind when you hear the song.
You should then ask the musician if they have any of their own ideas in which they would like to see portrayed in the video and you can then intertwine these ideas to create something great.
- Their are some videos which are story-driven which are effective for the audience or may reflect the lyrics of the song. They are videos that portray a story within them.
- Their are also performance-driven videos which is often used by rock bands as sometimes that is something that the audience wants to see in the video. They are very economically driven videos.
- You can also do videos that combine both performance and story-driven ideas which is also really effective.
When choosing actors to perform or act in your video you need to choose ones that are good at acting rather then just using your friends.

Production Meetings.

10th November 2010
In today's lesson, we had a production meeting about the details for our music video. We discussed what our genre will be, a detailed audience profile, the resources needed, the experts help that will be needed, the budget that is needed, the song we will use and the company name.

To begin with, we thought that the company name was an important aspect to start to think about as it will be our label and identity on every file. We decided to combine the four of our names and came up with the name TARC LTD. (Tiyonne, Abigail, Renee and Cara). Before coming up with this name, we came up with various other ones which didn't quite work and debated and negotiated to come to a final decision.
After we had sorted out the name of the company, we then went on to establishing the genre of the music video and decided that we will do a mix of the blues and a comedy genre/theme for our music video as it reflects and fits our video storyline very good.
We can not use another artists song that is recent for copyright reasons so the other options are to use someone else's song in which they have written and they give you permission to make a video for, write your own song or use a song that is from over a decade ago as the copyright infringement is less serious then one that has been created recently. We have decided to use a song from over a decade ago. We thought of the following ideas to fit our storyline in the video:

Whitney Houston - I will always love you
These are songs that are very appropriate for the video and will definitely be considered.
The resources that I will need for the production process and the rehearsals are:

- Black clothing/ costumes
They are just a few of the main resources that will be needed.
In order to create the music video, we will be needing the help of various professionals and experts in filming so that our creation will be successful. Fortunately, we can find all of that help within our school community from Mr Mackintosh, Mr Ianananandrea and Niraj Chag as they are experienced in this sector.
To create our video, we do not really need a budget, however if money is needed, it will only be about £20. This isn't a lot at all and we can make this money by doing a fundraiser in school.
It is important that we recognise the audience of our music video as this may shape the way we do our music video to fit the audience. We decided that the target audience would be those who are 12+ as their are elements of sadness within it. Also we said that it is for people who appreciate humour as we have added aspects of abstract humour and it is suitable for both males and females.

Ideas for the video

4.1: Movie Storm Software.

Movie Storm: Education tools for the YouTube Generation.

Movie storm is a new medium for making music videos and is great for teaching and learning. It allows you to create your own creative and innovative films and videos without having to be a professional film maker. It gives everyone the opportunity to get a head start in film making and acts as a starting point for those aspiring to become a film director. It enhances general teaching and learning by providing access to a foundation of solutions, such as videos and lesson plans, created by teachers to share with other teachers and available for free.

4.1: Development of Record.

Black and White - No Sound.

This is one of Charlie Chaplin's films that are in black and white with no sound. It is from 1914 and is a great example of the development of record and represents what record was like then.

Black and White - With Sound.

This is a clip from a series of episodes of the sitcom "Laurel and Hardy" and it is from 1934. It is a black and white programme with sound and speech which immediately shows a development from silent films.

Colour Recording.

This is a recording that was done by someone using a video camera or even a mobile phone. The video is in colour and a vast improvement has happened since the 1934 clip. Now recordings can not only be made on computers but on mobile phones too! It is now so easy to record something.

Music Video.


This is a perfect example of a music video that demonstrates the use of special effects, transitions, different camera shots and a clear representative of modern technology. It is of a high quality standard and shows the vast development of recording technology from Charlie Chaplin's time. In comparison to eachother, you can immediately spot the individual differences and advances between them.

4.1: Storing Records.

The Jungle Book on VHS (Video Home System)

Jungle book was first made in October 1967 but during the 70's VHS was introduced. The film was then re-produced into VHS and was released in 1991.
It took a team of people from the Walt Disney company and the use of digital technology to reproduce it. In comparison to modern films created in this century, the overall quality of the film is quite poor and not as sharp as today however it is a classic. I think one of the factors that would have contributed to the poor quality of the film would be the period that it was created in. Since the 90's, technology has advanced a lot and new versions of home entertainment has been produced.

According to the technological website tech target, VHS is "a widely adopted videocassette recording (VCR) technology that was developed by Japan Victor Company (JVC) and was put on the market in 1976". It was the beginning of modern home entertainment and was a way for people to watch their films at home.

In 1842, Charles Babbage invented an analytical engine for performing and storing calculations. This is when the age of computer began. 4.1: Technical Terms For Review

Camera:
- Shots: Close-up = Head shot
Medium shot = Head to waist
Extreme medium shot = Head to Knees
Long shot = Full Body
Extreme long shot = Body and things around you.
- Angles: High/ birds eye view; Low/ Worms eye view
- Movements: Panning: Camera showing the area around you.
Tracking: Camera following a person/object

Lighting:
-Low key lighting
-Natural lighting
-artificial lighting

Editing:
Montage: A series of clips that don't initially make sense but by the end, it will be clear
Continuity: Series of clips in a clear sequence.
(Transitions: how it moves from onelip to the next)

Mise en Scene
All that you can see in the film/video etc. E.G: Props
French word which means 'put in the scene'

Sound
-Diagetic: Natural sound that is actually in the film For Example: if a sound is made and the characters respond to it. Also maybe music playing in a car.
-Non Diagetic: Sound that is added and that only the audience can hear.

2. How is the artist Presented as a star
3. Is there any intertextuality
4. Does the action reflect the lyrics
5. Male Gaze

Do they use any Computer Generated Images (CGI)
